Windows 8 Rumors

I just read an article at PC World about some leaked Microsoft documents that outline some of the features MS would like to have in Windows 8. Apparently there have been some rumors in the past that Windows 8 might be a 128-bit OS. This kind of surprised me. I don't see where there is any advantage to having a 128-bit OS.

To understand why 128-bit may not be helpful we have to compare current 32-bit and 64-bit OSs. The main benefit of 64-bit over 32-bit is the amount of addressable memory you can have on either OS. With 32-bit your limited to 4Gb of RAM. Where as 64-bit can address up to 16 Eb (exabytes). That's ruffly 17,179,869,184 Gb. If you think speed is a good reason for the change, think again. In some cases a 32-bit system is faster then a 64-bit system.

Probably the most important reason why 128-bit is a joke (for now), is that there are currently no 128-bit CPUs available or planned. At least ones that are comparable with the x86 architecture. As far as i know none are being develop. Not to mention there isn't a standardized 128-bit instruction set yet. So why would Microsoft want to try and release a 128-bit OS by 2012? Maybe this will be a server OS?
